JUDGING CRITERIA

The team's entry will be assessed in five categories.

A practical test of the vehicle on the model track (Weighting 25%)

  • In keeping with Land Rover's 'go anywhere' values this is a very tough course involving the negotiation of numerous obstacles with several tight turns
  • In keeping with the company's 'Tread Lightly' principle, teams will need to demonstrate their knowledge of, and skill in, using the Land Rover Driving Guidelines
  • The test track has been designed and built by the same company that builds the test track for real Land Rovers

Design innovation and creativity (Weighting 25%)

  • Innovation and creativity  (Weighting 10%)
  • Designer portfolio  (Weighting 15%)

Design and construction of vehicle including electronics (Weighting 25%)

  • Designer portfolio
  • Design innovation and creativity
  • Appropriateness of materials and manufacturing process
  • Use of electronics, e.g. tilt and light sensors
  • Quality of component build
  • Quality of total vehicle build
  • Final appearance and finish of vehicle
  • Sustainability: such as recycling and weight of the vehicle
  • Finance and budgetary control
  • Project management
  • Evidence of individual contributions

Presenting the project report to a panel of judges using multimedia technology (Weighting 15%)

  • A 15-minute presentation by the whole team that details all aspects of the project to include research, generation of ideas, testing, building, sustainability issues, finance and evaluation. Previous participants have combined videos and pictures in a PowerPoint presentation
  • An additional five minutes will be allocated to the judges for questions to the team

A set of financial accounts (Weighting 10%)

  • A set of accounts clearly itemising the income and expenditure for the build of the vehicle. The three types of costing, as detailed in the specification, need to be clearly identified

What is the judging process?
Regional Heats take place during June with a National Final for the regional winners at the beginning of July.

What are the judges looking for?
This year's Challenge (2008/09) will be looking specifically for students to demonstrate awareness of environmental challenges in respect of the weight of the vehicle and recycling issues.
